Apple Compatible Point of Sale Hardware

The Mac is the center of your digital life and there's no reason it shouldn't be at the center of your business life either. POS Hardware manufacturers have gone to great lengths to make sure their marque products are compatible with Mac OS X, and POSMicro wants to highlight those products. These barcode scanners, receipt printers, and cash drawers have been tested and work with Mac OS X up to Lion (10.7), so you can be sure that you can ring up customers with your Mac.

iOS devices, including the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, require Bluetooth barcode scanners to receive data properly. The Opticon OPN2002 and Motorola CS3070 keychain scanners are great additions, as their small size makes it easy to toss the barcode scanner in a pocket when you don't need it. For more advanced scanning, the Motorola LI4278 and Honeywell Xenon 1902 are fantastic and aggressive Bluetooth barcode scanners.

Most USB barcode scanners and card readers should be compatible with Mac OS X. Any scanners or readers that run in human interface device (HID) mode should send data in the same way a USB keyboard would. The only reason we say should is because we haven't been able to test every scanner on the market. Some of the ones we know work are the Honeywell 1300g, Honeywell Xenon, and Motorola LI4278. For card readers, you can't go wrong with the IDTech MiniMag.

Receipt printers require drivers, so compatibility can be limited. The Epson TM-T88V and Star TSP100 receipt printers both offer Mac OS X printer drivers, so you can easily get started. And as for cash drawers, any printer driven drawer should work, so long as you have a compatible receipt printer. We like the MMF Advantage and POS-X EVO-CD cash drawers as they are sturdy, reliable, and provide great security for your cash.
